The Best Caravan Water Filter: An Honest Buyer's Guide for Australia

Search "best caravan water filter" and you'll get a page of listicles ranking ten filters the author has never fitted. They're not wrong, exactly. They're just not useful — because the best filter depends entirely on what you're filling from, how you use your water, and what you're willing to replace every few months.

So this isn't a top-ten. It's the six things that actually decide whether a caravan water filter is any good, the honest list of what no filter can do, and — yes — the one we'd fit. Read the criteria and you'll be able to judge any filter on the shelf, ours included.

First: what you're actually filtering

Everything you put in your tanks arrives with passengers. Broadly three kinds:

  • Physical — sediment, rust, sand, grit. Bore water and rain tanks are full of it.
  • Chemical — chlorine, chloramine, taste and odour compounds, dissolved metals, and increasingly PFAS in town supply.
  • Biological — bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts like Giardia.

A caravan water filter handles the first two. It does not handle the third — and any filter marketed as if it does is selling you something it can't deliver. Hold that thought; we'll come back to it.

The five types of caravan water filter

Every filter on the market is one of these. Knowing which is which saves you buying the wrong one twice.

1. The cheap disposable inline (the servo special). A single thin carbon cartridge in a plastic tube, $20–40. Carbon is good at chlorine and taste — but hopeless with sediment. Feed it bore or tank water and the grit blinds the carbon in weeks, flow drops to a dribble, and you're buying another. Fine for a weekend on town water. A subscription to landfill for anything else.

2. Twin-cartridge sediment + carbon. Two housings in series: a coarse sediment stage that catches the dirt, then a carbon stage that handles the chemicals. This is the right principle — cheap filter does the dirty work, dear filter does the fine work. The downside is bulk, two cartridges to buy, and often disappointing flow.

3. The high-flow composite (sediment + carbon in one cartridge). A single cartridge that bonds a sediment-catching fibre layer to activated carbon, so you get staged filtration in one housing at proper flow rates. 4. Under-sink or drinking-tap filters. Fine filtration on one tap only. Good for the water you drink; useless for protecting your tank, pump and hot water system. A second layer, not a first one.

5. Reverse osmosis (RO). The only thing that touches dissolved salt — so it's the answer if you're fighting brackish bore water. It's also slow, wastes water, needs pressure, and is overkill for 95% of caravanners. Know it exists; don't start here.

The six things that actually matter

1. Micron rating — and whether it's real

The micron number is the size of particle the filter stops. Smaller is finer. Two traps:

Nominal vs absolute. A nominal 1-micron filter stops most 1-micron particles. An absolute rating stops effectively all of them. Marketing loves the small number; only absolute ratings mean much for anything health-related.

Finer isn't better everywhere. A super-fine filter on the fill line turns a 10-minute fill into 40 and clogs constantly on bore water. 0.5–5 micron is the sweet spot for a fill-line filter — fine enough to strip sediment, rust and the muck that ruins taste, coarse enough to keep flowing.

2. Flow rate — the spec everyone ignores

This is the one that separates a filter you'll love from one you'll bypass after a month.

A caravan fill runs at roughly 8–12 litres a minute off a tap. Put a 2 L/min filter on it and you're standing at the tap for half an hour, and your shower drops to a trickle. For the fill line you want 10 L/min or better. For a drinking-tap-only filter, low flow is fine — but don't put a drinking filter on your fill line and wonder why filling takes all afternoon.

3. Staging — sediment before carbon

Carbon does the chemical work, but it blinds fast if sediment reaches it. Any decent filter puts a sediment stage in front of the carbon — either as two housings or as a composite cartridge that layers both. A single bare carbon cartridge with no sediment stage is the servo special, whatever the price tag says.

4. Cartridge life and real cost

The price on the box is the least important number. The real cost is per year of travel. A $30 filter you replace every six weeks on bore water costs you more than a $95 cartridge that lasts 6–12 months — and the cheap one leaves you unfiltered every time it clogs between servos. Look at cartridge life on the kind of water you actually fill from, and price the year, not the unit.

5. Fittings and install

12mm push-fit is the caravan standard; a hose-fitting version lets you filter as you fill from any tap. Either way it should be an owner-install — no plumber, no tools, cartridge swap in minutes. If a filter needs custom adaptors you don't have, add that to the cost.

6. A way to know it's spent

Most people change a cartridge when the water starts tasting off — by which point the filter's been done for a while. A pressure gauge on the housing tells you when the cartridge is loading up, before it fails. It's a small thing that turns "I think it's due" into "it's due."

What no caravan water filter can do

This is the part the listicles leave out, and it's the part that matters most.

It won't kill bacteria or viruses. Most bacteria are 0.2–2 microns; viruses are smaller again. A 0.5-micron filter can't remove a 0.3-micron virus, no matter what it costs. And "bacteriostatic" carbon only stops bugs growing inside the filter — it's a maintenance feature, not water treatment. It won't remove salt. Brackish bore water sails straight through carbon and sediment filters. Only reverse osmosis touches dissolved salts. Salty bore is wash water, not drinking water. Our bore water guide covers what's actually in outback water.

It won't fix a dirty tank. Filter perfectly at the inlet and your tank still grows biofilm in the heat. Sanitise the tank a couple of times a year, and treat the water you drink at the point of use.

A filter that's honest about these limits is a filter you can trust on the things it does claim.

Where to fit it: fill line or tap?

On the fill line, as the baseline. Filtering every litre as it enters the tank protects the tank, the pump, the lines and the hot water system from sediment — and keeps chlorine taste out of the tank in the first place. At the tap, for treatment. If you drink from mixed or unknown sources, add UV on the delivery side for the water that actually goes in your glass.

FAQ

What's the best caravan water filter?
The one that matches your water. For most Australian tourers that's a high-flow staged (sediment + carbon) filter on the fill line, around 0.5 micron, 10+ L/min, with a cartridge that lasts a season — paired with UV if you fill from tanks or bores. That's the spec the Pro Flow 12 was built to.

Do I actually need a caravan water filter?
If you only ever fill from town water at home, it's a taste-and-chlorine nicety. The moment you fill from a station bore, a rain tank or a roadside tap, it's protecting your tank, pump and hot water system from sediment — and your tea from tasting like a pool.

Inline vs under-sink — which is better?
Different jobs. An inline fill-line filter protects the whole van and needs high flow. An under-sink filter treats one tap and can be fine and slow. The baseline is the fill line; under-sink is an optional second layer.

How often should I change the cartridge?
Every 6–12 months on typical mixed water; sooner on heavy bore water. Falling flow is the sign — or a pressure gauge, which tells you before the flow falls.

Does a caravan water filter remove bacteria?
No. Carbon and sediment filters remove particles and chemicals, not bacteria or viruses. That needs UV. Be wary of any filter that implies otherwise.

Will a filter drop my water pressure?
