You pull into camp after a day on the dirt, open the door, and there it is — a film of red dust over the bed, the bench, inside the cupboards, in the cutlery drawer. Bulldust gets into everything. It's the finest dust in the country and it finds every gap you've got.
The good news: dust-proofing a caravan isn't complicated. It comes in through a handful of predictable places, and sealing those is the whole game. Here's where the dust actually gets in, worst offender first, and how to shut each one down — from the cheap five-minute fixes to the full dust-reduction setup.
Where dust actually gets into your van
Dust doesn't come through the walls. It comes through gaps and pressure. As you drive, the van moves air around — low pressure in some spots literally sucks dust in through:
- Roof vents — the number one entry point.
- Door and window seals — perished or thin rubber.
- Floor and wall penetrations — wiring, plumbing and gas lines through the floor.
- Cable entries — Starlink, solar and aerial cables run through the wall.
- Hatches and external lockers — boot doors, checkerplate boxes, the water/gas hatch.
- The fridge vent — a deliberate hole in the side of your van.
Work through them in order and you'll stop 90% of the dust with the first two or three fixes.
Fix #1: Roof vents (the biggest culprit)
Your roof vents are the easiest path in. On a corrugated road the vent lifts and rattles, and dust pours straight through the gaps — same story with insects at dusk and water when you wash the van.
The fix is a vent cover that sits over the vent and blocks dust, bugs and wash water from the front while leaving the back open so the vent still breathes. No drilling, about five minutes with a screwdriver.

How to fit it — step by step
- Clean the vent. Wipe the top of the existing pressed-aluminium vent so nothing's caught under the cover.
- Sit the cover over the vent. The Vankor cover is shaped to drop straight over a standard caravan vent.
- Screw it down. Use the supplied screws into the existing vent frame. No new holes, no drilling into the roof.
- Check the rear is clear. The back stays open on purpose — that's what keeps the airflow while blocking dust and water.

Measure your existing vent and match it:
- 225 x 150mm — the common larger roof vent. Shop the 225 × 150mm cover.

Fix #2: Door and window seals
The second-biggest path. Rubber seals perish, flatten and crack with sun and age, and once they do, dust walks straight in around the door.
- Run your hand around the door seal — if it's hard, cracked or squashed flat, replace it. Fresh bulb seal is cheap.
- Check the window rubbers and the seal on any pop-top or roof hatch.
- A quick test: shut a sheet of paper in the door. If it pulls out with no drag, the seal isn't gripping.
Fix #3: Floor and wall penetrations
Every wire, water line and gas pipe that passes through the floor is a potential dust hole — and a lot of factory jobs are just a loose grommet or nothing at all.
- Get underneath and look for gaps around wiring looms, the water pump lines and the gas line.
- Seal them with proper grommets or a smear of Sikaflex. Don't use expanding foam on the underside — it holds water.
Fix #4: Seal your cable entries properly
Starlink, solar and aerial cables that run through the wall are a classic dust (and water) leak, especially if they were drilled and left with a blob of silicone.

Fix #5: The positive-pressure trick
The serious outback tourers do one more thing: they pressurise the van. Run a filtered fan (through a roof vent or a dedicated intake) that pushes clean air in, and the inside of the van sits at slightly higher pressure than outside. Instead of dust being sucked in through every gap, air is gently pushed out through them.
It's more involved than a vent cover, but on serious corrugated country it's the difference between a dusty van and a clean one. Seal the obvious gaps first — pressurising a leaky van just wastes the fan.
Fix #6: Hatches, lockers and the fridge vent
- External hatches and boot doors — check their seals the same as the main door; add foam tape where they've gone thin.
- Fridge vent — you can't seal it (the fridge needs airflow), but a fine mesh or a fridge vent insert cuts the dust coming through on the worst runs.
A few habits that help
- Tape the vents on really dusty runs. A strip of painter's tape over a vent for one bad corrugated stretch saves a big clean-up.
- Park nose-in to the wind at a dusty camp so the pressure works with your seals, not against them.
- Do the cheap fixes first. Vent covers and fresh door seals stop most of it before you go chasing the exotic stuff.
