"If I set Sleep Schedule on my Starlink Mini, does it actually save my battery, or should I just cut the power?"
Short answer: cutting the power saves way more. Sleep Schedule saves you a few watts. Off saves you the lot.
Here's the maths in plain English, and the easy way to cut power without climbing into your storage box every night.
What Sleep Schedule actually does
Sleep Schedule is a feature in the Starlink app. You set a start and end time. Between those hours, the dish drops into a lower-power state.
It's not "off." It's "quieter."
The Starlink Mini's idle draw sits around 15–17W (down from ~20–25W since the January 2026 firmware update, which trimmed power draw across the whole antenna range by about 25%). Sleep Schedule pulls that down to roughly 10–15W. Real-world saving: a few watts — maybe 2–6W depending on your unit and firmware.
The dish stays warm, keeps its clock, keeps its state, and boots back to full service in seconds when the schedule ends. That's the upside.
What "off" actually saves
Cut the power completely and the Starlink Mini draws zero. Full stop. You save the whole ~15–17W idle load.
The trade-off: cold boot. When you power it back on, you're looking at a couple of minutes to reacquire satellites and get back on the internet. There's also a short spike (40–60W) as it boots. But once it's running, you're back to normal.
For most caravan and off-grid setups, that trade-off is worth it. Here's why.
The maths on a normal caravan battery
Numbers matter. Here's what your Starlink Mini actually costs you overnight:

Put that into context.
A 100Ah AGM battery gives you about 600Wh of usable capacity (you don't want to drop below 50% state of charge or you cook it). At Sleep Schedule draw, your Starlink alone flattens that in under 5 nights. Left on, closer to 3 nights.
A 100Ah lithium gives you about 1,200Wh usable. Sleep Schedule burns through 84% of it in a week, from your Starlink alone. Off costs you nothing.
And that's before your fridge, lights, water pump, USB and everything else are pulling from the same bank.
When Sleep Schedule is fine
Sleep Schedule is the right call when:
- You're plugged into 240V at a caravan park — who cares about a few watts on shore power.
- You've got a big lithium bank (300Ah+) with solar keeping up during the day.
- You need Starlink to be up within seconds of your alarm going off, not a few minutes.
- You're only away one or two nights and you can top up the battery on the drive home.
When to just cut power
Cut power hard when:
- You're on battery only, no shore power.
- You're off-grid for more than a night or two.
- You're full-time in the van and battery cycles matter (fewer amp-hours cycled = longer battery life).
- You want the option to leave the dish parked for weeks without it slowly draining anything.
For most caravan buyers running battery + solar, this is the default answer.
The lazy way to cut power
The reason people default to Sleep Schedule isn't that it's better. It's that cutting power usually means either pulling a plug or getting up on the roof. Neither is fun at 10pm.

Common questions
Will Sleep Schedule stop it drawing power?
No. It just draws less. If you want zero draw, you need to actually cut power.
Isn't there a Starlink Standby plan? Isn't that the same thing?
Different thing. Standby is a data plan (A$15/month, stationary only since March 2026) that keeps your Starlink connected but at reduced data. Sleep Schedule is a hardware feature that reduces power draw during the hours you set. You can use both, neither, or either — they don't overlap.
How long does the Mini take to boot back up after being powered off?
A couple of minutes. Long enough to make a coffee. Not long enough to be a real problem.
Will cutting power damage the dish?
No. The Mini is designed for power interruptions — it's a portable device. You can cut power hundreds of times without issue.
Does my caravan wiring handle it?
Yes. The Starlink Mini accepts 12–48V DC natively. Our Booster steps 12V or 24V up to the 30V the dish likes, cleanly and efficiently. No inverter needed.
What if I want Sleep Schedule AND a Remote Switch?
Run both. Set Sleep Schedule for the times you might want a quick wake-up. Use the Remote Switch when you know you're done for the night. Belt and braces.
