Most caravan water filters handle the first two. Almost none handle the third.

The Three Threats in Your Tank Water (and Why Most Setups Only Handle Two)
Physical contaminants
These are the things you can sometimes see — sediment, rust flakes, sand, organic debris. They come from the tap you filled at, from a corroded hose fitting, or from the inside of your own tank. They're the easiest threat to deal with: a mechanical filter rated to 5 microns or finer will catch most of them.
Chemical contaminants
Town water in Australia is generally chlorinated, which is great for killing bacteria at the treatment plant — and not so great when you taste it in your morning coffee. Beyond chlorine, you can pick up dissolved metals (lead from old fittings, copper from plumbing), pesticides, and the family of off-flavour compounds that make rural town water taste "earthy" or "swampy." A quality carbon block filter handles most of these.
Biological contaminants
This is where most caravan setups fall short.
Bacteria range from about 0.2 to 2 microns in size. Viruses are smaller — typically 0.02 to 0.3 microns. Protozoan cysts like Giardia are larger (5–15 microns) but extraordinarily hardy, and surprisingly common in untreated rural and bore water.
A standard caravan filter rated to 5 microns will not stop bacteria or viruses. A 1-micron filter will catch Giardia cysts and some bacteria, but viruses pass straight through. And here's the problem nobody talks about: even if your filter caught every pathogen, you still have a 90-litre plastic tank sitting in the sun, accumulating biofilm on its inside walls. Biofilm is the microscopic slime layer where bacteria reproduce. Once it's established in your tank, every glass of water passes over it on the way to your tap.
This is why bottled water sellers still exist on the caravan circuit — and why "I filter my water" is a less complete answer than it sounds.
Why a Single Filter Isn't Enough
Filtration is a physical process. Water passes through a porous medium, and anything larger than the pores gets caught. This works brilliantly for sediment and — paired with activated carbon — for many chemicals.
It does not work brilliantly for biology, for three reasons:
Pore size is a hard limit. A 1-micron filter cannot remove a 0.3-micron virus, no matter how new or expensive it is. To physically filter out viruses, you need a sub-0.1-micron ultrafiltration membrane, which clogs quickly with caravan-grade water and dramatically reduces flow.
Carbon claims can mislead. Many carbon blocks are marketed as "bacteriostatic" — meaning silver or other agents inhibit bacterial growth inside the filter itself. That's not the same as killing bacteria already in the water. It's a maintenance feature for the filter, not a treatment feature for you.
Biofilm regrows downstream. Even with perfect filtration at the inlet, the tubing, tank, and tap downstream of your filter can host bacterial growth — especially in warm conditions and especially when your caravan sits unused for weeks at a time.
The only practical way to handle biological contamination in a caravan is to inactivate pathogens after they leave the tank — at the point of use, just before the water reaches your tap. That's what UV-C does.

What UV-C Sterilisation Actually Does
UV-C is short-wavelength ultraviolet light — specifically, light in the 200–280 nanometre range, with peak germicidal activity around 254–265 nm. It doesn't filter anything. It doesn't add anything to the water. It works by damaging the DNA and RNA of micro-organisms so they cannot reproduce — and an organism that cannot reproduce cannot make you sick.
UV-C kills, or more accurately inactivates, the full spectrum of waterborne pathogens that filters miss:
- E. coli and other bacteria
- Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts
- Hepatitis A, norovirus, rotavirus and other viruses
- The full range of common waterborne nasties caravanners actually encounter
It does this in seconds, at room temperature, without chemicals, without heat, and without changing the taste or pH of the water.
Why LED beats traditional mercury lamps
Most UV-C water sterilisers in the world are still based on low-pressure mercury vapour lamps. They work, but they have problems that matter especially for caravans:
- They need 30–60 seconds to warm up before they reach germicidal output.
- They contain mercury — a disposal and breakage hazard in a moving vehicle.
- They draw significant power and run hot.
- Their output degrades over 8,000–12,000 hours, and they fail without warning.

The Two-Stage System: Filter, Then UV-C
The order matters.
UV-C light has to pass through water to reach pathogens. If the water is cloudy with sediment, organic matter, or rust, the light can't penetrate, and the dose drops. Pathogens hiding behind a particle of grit will survive.
That's why a serious caravan water system runs in two stages:
Stage 1 — Filtration. Water passes through a sediment + carbon block filter that strips out particles down to 0.5 micron, removes chlorine and improves taste. The water leaving stage 1 is clear, low-chlorine, and good to drink in town water terms. But it can still contain bacteria, viruses or cysts.
Stage 2 — UV-C LED sterilisation. The clear, filtered water passes through a UV-C LED reactor where it's exposed to germicidal light at the 254–265 nm wavelength range that disrupts the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts. What comes out the other side is biologically safe.
It's the same logic municipal water treatment plants use, scaled down for a caravan and powered from your 12V system.
What to Look For in a Caravan-Grade System
Not every UV-C steriliser on the market is fit for caravan use. Before you spend money, check the following:
- UV-C LED, not mercury lamp. Mercury-vapour UV systems were the standard for decades but they need warm-up time, contain mercury, and degrade unpredictably. UV-C LED gives you instant-on operation, no mercury, and stable output — the right choice for a 12V caravan setup.
- 12V. Many residential UV systems are 240V. Running them in a caravan means an inverter, which adds cost, weight, and inefficiency. A 12V system plugs straight into your battery bank.
- Sealed housing built for vibration. Caravans vibrate, get wet, and live in dust. Look for double O-ring seals, a robust housing material, and components rated for moisture exposure.
- Sensible flow rate. Caravan use is intermittent and rarely above 6–8 LPM. A system over-spec'd for residential flow rates will be larger and more power-hungry than you need.
- Designed for Australian touring conditions. Pressure ranges, temperature tolerance, and component materials all matter — look for systems built for the heat, dust, and vibration you'll actually encounter on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will UV-C change the taste of my water?
No. UV-C only damages the genetic material of pathogens. It does not add anything to the water and does not change taste, pH, or mineral content.
Do I still need a filter if I have UV-C?
Yes. UV-C only inactivates pathogens; it does not remove sediment, chlorine, heavy metals, or off-flavours. You also need a clear water stream for the UV dose to be effective. Filter first, sterilise second.
Will UV-C work on tank water that's been sitting for weeks?
Yes — and this is actually one of UV-C's strongest use cases. Tank water that's been stored for weeks can develop biofilm and bacterial loads that even a fine filter won't catch. UV-C inactivates them at the point of use.
How much power does a UV-C LED steriliser draw?
