Magnetic mounts get all the airtime. And for a steel-roofed wagon doing blacktop and the odd gravel road, they're a good answer.
But plenty of rigs aren't that. Alloy canopies. Fibreglass campers. Utes with a full-length rack and a rooftop tent taking every flat panel. If that's you, a magnet was never the answer — the roof rack was.

Why mount to the rack instead of the roof?
Magnets need steel. Most canopies are aluminium, most camper and caravan roofs are fibreglass or composite. Magnets grip neither. You can stick adhesive steel discs on, but now you've got permanent discs on a roof so a “removable” mount can work — on a vehicle where you already have a rack sitting right there.
Racks are the strongest real estate on the vehicle. A rated rack is engineered for load, torsion and corrugations. Bolting to it puts your dish on structure, not on sheet metal.
Height buys signal. The Mini needs a wide, clear view of the sky. Rack height lifts it above the rooftop tent, the awning and the spare, which means fewer obstruction dropouts at camp.
Set and forget. A bolted mount means the dish lives on the vehicle. Pull into camp, power on, online. No climbing on the roof, no repositioning, no “where do we put the dish tonight” conversation.
The trade-off is honest: it's a permanent-style install, and the dish stays exposed to weather and branches. We'll deal with both below.
What to look for in a roof rack mount

Cable exit. The mount should let the cable leave the dish cleanly and route along the rack without kinking at the connector. The factory connector is a known weak point if the cable hangs unsupported.
Installation: the right way, step by step
Budget 30–45 minutes with basic tools.
- Pick the spot. As central and clear of obstructions as you can. Open the Starlink app's obstruction checker, hold your phone where the dish will sit, and scan. Do this before drilling or bolting anything.
- Mock it up. Sit the mount and dish in place. Check awning clearance, rooftop tent clearance when open, and that your shed or carport still fits the vehicle with the dish on. (Ask us how people learn this one.)
- Bolt it down. M8 stainless bolts, spring or nyloc washers, torqued firmly. Corrugations undo lazy bolts — thread-locker is cheap insurance.
- Route the cable along the rack. Cable-tie every 200–300mm. Leave a drip loop before the cable enters the cabin or canopy so water runs off the loop instead of following the cable in. If you need reach, use a proper extension cable, not a daisy chain of adaptors.
- Make the entry waterproof. Don't drill a hole and fill it with silicone. Use a sealed cable passthrough plate — clean, sealed, and serviceable when you need to pull the cable later.

- Test before the trip. Full obstruction scan, speed test, then a drive down the worst road you can find locally. Check every bolt after.
